How To Exit The Hatch

an adventure game for immigrants and people of colour. the hatch was never a ceiling. it was a test — and one player breaking through levels up the whole team.

A person who has climbed through a concrete hatch holds a ladder for relatives below; the removed lid lies beside the opening.
The first person through turns the opening into a route for everyone.

Every immigrant and every person of color is born inside The Hatch.

Not a metaphor. This is an actual Level-0 tutorial dungeon: low resources, high expectations, random aunties giving side quests, zero cheat codes, permanent “do not embarrass the family” debuff.

Meanwhile, other players spawn at Level 10 with parental upgrades like unlimited WiFi, summer camps, emotional stability.

But here’s the good news: the Hatch can be exited. And when ONE player breaks through, the whole team levels up.

Let’s study the OG boss-fighters.

PLAYER 1: Serena Williams — the family party quest. Serena didn’t solo the Hatch. Her house ran like a co-op RPG: dad as coach NPC with infinite stamina, mom as emotional shield mage, sister as co-tank, the whole household as XP boosters. When Serena beat the Hatch, she unlocked the “generational exit” portal for everyone.

PLAYER 2: Beyoncé — the collective build. Beyoncé’s family played in formation. Tina crafted armor (costumes). Mathew built strategy (maps). Solange offered the moral compass (rare loot). Beyoncé wasn’t the “chosen one.” She was the designated launcher. When she left the Hatch, she left the door wide open.

PLAYER 3: Steven Bartlett — the solo glitch runner. Immigrant discipline, self-belief mods, rejection XP, homemade hustle. He speed-ran the Hatch with pure mindset upgrades and a broken laptop. This is the “WiFi + trauma = startup founder” build.

PLAYER 4: Deepak Chopra — the spiritual backdoor. Deepak saw the Hatch and said: “No thanks, I’ll walk through the wall.” He meditated IRL until the barrier dissolved and unlocked the consciousness exit. Different route. Same boss defeated.

PLAYER 5: YOU — the player in progress. Your playthrough guide:

1. Max your skill tree. The Hatch respects mastery.

2. Upgrade articulation. Words are weapons. Use them.

3. Keep your nervous system regulated. Chaos is the Hatch’s favorite trap.

4. Build an ecosystem. You need a party. No one exits alone.

5. Become excellent enough to break the simulation. Immigrant/POC excellence isn’t perfection — it’s ingenuity.

6. Exit ego-first. You leave the Hatch so your people don’t have to start where you started.

BOSS LEVEL: the Hatch was never a ceiling. It was a test. And once you break out, you don’t just win. You unlock the world for everyone who comes after you.
