The first year of Aurat Raaj had no technology in it at all. It was a platform where Pakistani women told their own stories — interviews with women leaders and role models, women in gang-war neighbourhoods and conflict zones, transgender women, women talking openly about sexual and reproductive choice. And it was self-defence classes: rows of schoolgirls in Karachi learning to punch and break a grab, so they could walk out of a room. Physical self-defence first. The digital kind came later, and it was the same idea.
Also that year: the Women Empowerment Camp, and a photography initiative that put cameras in the hands of Thari women so they could take their own pictures instead of being someone else's subject. Seed grant from The Pollination Project, 2017. Incubated at The Nest I/O.
